Sri Aurobindo came to this township, Chinsurah, in the district of Hooghly to attend the Bengal Provincial Conference in September 1909.
The Hooghly Conference had had the rare privilege to meet, Aurobindo Ghosh, in the eyes of the British administration “the most dangerous man". This was his last appearance in the largest-ever-attending conference before leaving for Pondicherry to enter into his 'cave of tapasya' to take a very difficult preparatory step towards his aim culminating in 'This earthly life becomes the life divine.' This conference observed in him a pragmatic Sri Aurobindo, knew in Sri Aurobindo an aspirant for unity, felt in his worker-self the Yogi Sri Aurobindo. His aim was to realize his dream of establishing the life divine on this rough, barren mother earth. And keeping 'Inflexible his look towards Truth's far end' he will, a few months later, leave his beloved motherland, Bengal; His leadership in this political platform gave hint of that Spiritual Power, which is the basic foundation of that immutable aim.
Chinsurah is that town in the play of his life, where the leader of the nation who is to become a World Teacher' in future, uttered - ..hear me in perfect silence.
All these functionalities, his short stay at Chinsurah to attend the Hooghly Conference etc. became a special chapter in the life-history of Sri Aurobindo.
Eighty years after this conference, the Relics of Sri Aurobindo was enshrined, for the first time in the Hooghly District, in this Bhavan premises in the year 1989.
